Born in 1917 in London, England, singer Vera Lynn began performing at age of 7. She gave up school at age 11 to start touring. By the late 1930s, Lynn had become a popular radio performer, appearing on the program Life from Mayfair. She got her own show, Sincerely Yours, in 1941. After World War II ended, Lynn made more albums and continued to tour. She had a No. 1 hit in the United States, "Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart," in the early 1950s. Queen Elizabeth II made Lynn a dame of the British Empire in 1975. In 2009, she topped the British album charts with We'll Meet Again: The Very Best of Vera Lynn.

Lynn also traveled abroad during the war, performing live shows for the troops. In 1941, she married Harry Lewis, a musician with the Royal Air Force's band. Lynn ranked No. 1 on a poll regarding soldiers' favorite entertainer, beating out the likes of Bing Crosby and Judy Garland, and became known as the "Forces' Sweetheart."

In 2009, Lynn made a remarkable return to the British music charts. She was 92 years old at the time—becoming the oldest person to have the No. 1 top-selling album in the country—with the collection We'll Meet Again: The Very Best of Vera Lynn. That same year, she published the memoir Some Sunny Day.

Mr. Hamlisch was a 12-time Academy Award nominee for his score and song contributions to films as varied as “The Spy Who Loved Me” and “Sophie’s Choice” and a three-time Oscar winner for the score of “The Sting” as well as the score from “The Way We Were” and its title song (with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman). NASA's $2.5-billion mission involved the work of more than 5,000 people from 37 states, some of whom had labored for 10 years to hear the two words that Al Chen, a Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineer, said inside mission control at 10:32 p.m.: “Touchdown confirmed.”

Chen reported that Curiosity was in a “nice flat place,” and as icing on the cake, the spacecraft sent home thumbnail photographs of itself. Officials had said earlier in the day that photographs were possible but unlikely. Curiosity responded by immediately delivering a series of images, one showing one of its wheels resting comfortably on the floor of an ancient crater.

On April 10, 1912, the RMS Titanic embarked on its maiden voyage, sailing from Southampton, England, to New York City. One of the largest and most luxurious passenger liners at the time, the Titanic was also considered by many to be unsinkable. On April 14, however, the ship struck an iceberg, and early the next day it sank. Some 1,500 people perished. Because of the tragedy, the Titanic became perhaps the best-known ship in the world, capturing the public imagination and inspiring popular books and movies. After the 1985 discovery of its wreckage, interest in the famed liner only increased. Some 100 years after its sinking, the Titanic remains an enduring legend.

Christians believe, according to Scripture, that Jesus came back to life, or was raised from the dead, three days after his death on the cross. With the laying of the foundation stone in June 1895, the Cathedral was dedicated to The Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, to his Blessed Mother, his Foster Father St Joseph and St Peter, his Vicar. There are secondary patrons, also: St Augustine and all British saints, St Patrick and all saints of Ireland. These dedications provide a meditation in themselves and are reflected in features of the Cathedral such as the pelican feeding her young with the blood of her own body (an ancient symbol of Christ selflessly nourishing redeemed humanity), the great crucifix that hangs between the nave and the sanctuary, and the side chapels, many of which honour patron saints.

Many Christians throughout the world observe Lent. Catholic, Orthodox, and many Protestants look forward to this annual time of sacrifice and simplicity.

The purpose of Lent is to be a season of fasting, self-denial, Christian growth, penitence, conversion, and simplicity. Lent, which comes from the Teutonic (Germanic) word for springtime, can be viewed as a spiritual spring cleaning: a time for taking spiritual inventory and then cleaning out those things which hinder our corporate and personal relationships with Jesus Christ and our service to him. Thus it is fitting that the season of Lent begin with a symbol of repentance: placing ashes mixed with oil on one's head or forehead. However, we must remember that our Lenten disciplines are supposed to ultimately transform our entire person: body, soul, and spirit. Our Lenten disciplines are supposed to help us become more like Christ.

Saint Joseph's College is a coeducational, private, Catholic liberal arts college located in Rensselaer, Indiana. It was founded in 1889 by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood (C.PP.S.). Approximately 1,000 students currently attend the College.
